Methodology

Defensible to an auditor. Understandable by a board.

How AfriESG turns frameworks, evidence and results into a score you can stand behind.

Materiality comes first

Nothing is scored until you and your stakeholders have decided which topics matter for your business. That assessment covers both the financial view and the impact view, so the topics you report on are the ones an investor, a regulator and a community would each recognise.

Two scores, kept apart

AfriESG Ready measures whether the organisation is organised to report: governance, management systems, readiness for IFRS S1 and S2, and the quality of evidence. AfriESG Performance measures results across the topics that are material to you, spanning People, Planet, and Profit and Governance. The AfriESG Rating is derived from performance. Readiness is shown beside it so a reader can see both, and neither can be used to dress up the other.

Every topic is asked three questions

Is it in place? Is it working? Can you prove it? Policies and systems, measured results against peers, and dated, approved evidence each contribute to the topic score. A claim without evidence cannot reach the top of the scale. That single rule is the anti-greenwashing mechanism, and it is why an AfriESG score survives an auditor.

Honesty is never punished

Recording a risk never lowers a score. Only unresolved gaps do, and their effect is bounded, so the organisation that is candid about its problems is never worse off than the one that hides them.

Built on the frameworks you are measured against

The methodology is aligned to IFRS S1 and S2, the GRI Standards, the GHG Protocol, SBTi, TCFD and TNFD, and mapped to Kenyan requirements from the CBK, CMA, NSE, NEMA, DOSH and ICPAK. One approved number fills every disclosure that needs it.

Grades that mean something

Ratings run from CCC to AAA. The upper grades carry an AfriESG certificate, issued only from a locked reporting period with sufficient evidence coverage and after review by an AfriESG analyst. A certificate can be verified publicly by its number.
